The garrison at dawn. The storehouse keeper on a stretcher (cloth wound round his head, face turned away) is carried in. — Dawn. The garrison. The keeper had been moved here during the night.
Yeonhwa. Her first cry ① — loud and high, breaking. Not at Yi Heon but at the air. — Yeonhwa: "Is this how they killed my mother too?" It was Yeonhwa's first cry in this story.
(hands) One of Yi Heon's hands on Yeonhwa's shoulder. No words. / (new) Yeonhwa steadying her breath. She closes her eyes. — A husband's hand. There were no words. She steadied her breath. This morning it is the outer court.
HARD CUT. The outer court, morning. The great hall on its platform, the stone yard, the rank stones. Wide. — The same day, morning. The palace outer court — a formal audience. For the first time the king wore the dragon robe and the royal cap.

Min Chi-gyeom points at his bound son. Grave — the mask of a grieving father. His eyes are dry and cold. He does not smile. / Doyun looks at his father and starts forward, stopped by his bonds. Breaking — high and fast. — Min Chi-gyeom: "It was my son who stole the army's grain." Doyun: "When did I ever touch the army's grain?"
Yeonhwa lays a paper on the table and points at one line. Composed, low. — Yeonhwa: "The money that was paid went into your house, my lord."
Min Chi-gyeom gives his son a look telling him to match his story. The last smile he makes in this work — one corner of the mouth; it does not reach his eyes. — Min Chi-gyeom: "Was the household not in your charge?" It was the last smile he makes in this work.
Doyun looks straight at his father for the first time. He pours it out to save himself. Breaking → fast. / (hands) Muyeong's hand passes an order to a messenger in the doorway. The image of a red-corded document (narration). — Doyun: "Do you cast me off? …Under the writing desk, a document bound with red cord." The red-corded document — under the writing desk at Min Chi-gyeom's house. The search party left from that spot.
The storehouse keeper, held up by others, barely makes it in. Cloth wound round his forehead, one eye swollen. Breathless, but clear. — Storehouse keeper: "Lord Min's men tried to kill me."
Yeonhwa looks at Min Chi-gyeom. Cold anger — one word at a time, low. The honorific is sarcasm. — Yeonhwa: "It was you, my lord, who ordered a man killed." Yeonhwa: "And you mean to put it on your son?"
(band) Min Chi-gyeom's smile stops. / He takes off his official cap, lays it on the table and asks for terms. He bargains gravely — chin up, no smile. — The smile stopped. It does not come back. Min Chi-gyeom: "I will surrender my office. Let me be questioned at home."
Yi Heon rises. The king's voice — for the first time broad and loud. He does not hurry. — Yi Heon: "He is held here. His command of troops is revoked as well."
(hands) Yi Heon sweeps the cap off the table with his own hand and passes it to Muyeong. / (hands) Muyeong draws Min Chi-gyeom's arms behind him and binds them — this time to the end. — The cap into Muyeong's hands. This time, to the end.
Min Chi-gyeom is taken out through the door in front of everyone (moving away). Doyun watches him go. / At the threshold Min Chi-gyeom turns only his head. Quietly, without a smile — a face with the anger pressed down. Not a threat but a prophecy. — In front of everyone, out the door. Min Chi-gyeom: "…Your Majesty, you will regret this."
Close on Yeonhwa. She watches without a word. Not composure but release. She breathes out. / Outside the palace gate. The gate captain folds the watch roster into his coat and signals his soldiers with his eyes. — She breathed out. For the first time, a long breath. Outside the palace gate. The gate captain — commander of the gate relief detail.
(hands) Two soldiers (in profile) nod once and take hold of their sword hilts — they do not draw. — They took hold of their hilts. They did not draw — not yet.
The gate captain's face. No words — a look. — At the gate stood soldiers who would move before the king's order.
