The corridor of the courtesan house. Yeonhwa calls to Muyeong as he turns toward the stairs. She catches for an instant on "sold." / Muyeong turning. He states where he serves — short and clear. — Yeonhwa: "Will you send me back to the father who sold me?" Muyeong: "Muyeong, officer of the Byeolyeong garrison." Byeolyeong — the garrison outside the palace charged with the king's own guard and his investigations.
The first sentence firm, the second a little softer. / (new) Yeonhwa holding her torn sleeve. She nods slightly. — Muyeong: "You will not be sent to that house. I will escort you." You will not be sent to that house. That morning, those words were everything.
The same morning, the garrison yard. Soldiers take bound suspects toward the holding rooms, while Yeonhwa and Mujin are shown to an open waiting room. / The open room. Yeonhwa on a cushion with a bowl of water. Mujin sits beside her, not at the head of the room. — The same morning. Outside the palace, the Byeolyeong garrison.
(new · hands) Two hands around a bowl of water. Steam rises. / Yeonhwa asking as she looks at the red mark on the deed of sale. She does not take her eyes off the paper. — The water was warm. Yeonhwa: "Did my father write this himself?"
The broker at the questioning. Polite now — a woman under arrest. / (new · hands) The broker's wrists bound with cord. — Broker: "He took thirty nyang and wrote it himself." The wrists that had named a price the day before were wound with cord.
Yeonhwa speeding up a little. / Doyun, his hands bound in front, answers instead and lunges half a step against the cord. Muyeong presses him back down by the shoulder. — Yeonhwa: "Then why were you after the ledger?" Doyun: "Take the ledger first, he said. Sell her wherever — your father's words."
(new) Doyun having finished. Even bound, he sneers. / (hands) The paper going slack in Yeonhwa's hand. — Even bound, he still trusted his father's name. Sell her wherever. My father's words came back to me out of another man's mouth.
(new) Yeonhwa's face. After she lets go of the paper — still. / Mujin beside her — he looks at Yeonhwa, not at the paper. — It hurt less to be sold than to be of no consequence.
(new) At Mujin's glance, Muyeong takes the two suspects out. / The room with the suspects gone. The two of them alone. Mujin asks carefully. — At Mujin's glance, Muyeong took the two of them out. Mujin: "Where is that book?"
Yeonhwa pushes the bowl aside and looks straight at him. Her voice drops after the pause. / (new · hands) Mujin's hand on his knee, closing into a fist and opening again. — The ledger. The ledger again. Her father, Doyun, the broker — and now this man. Yeonhwa: "Were you… looking for that book too?"
Mujin does not look away. Short and low. — Mujin: "I was."
Yeonhwa — her first whisper. Not a question but fear. — Yeonhwa: "…Who are you?"
(new) The room from above. The two of them seated facing each other look small. Silence. / (band cut) Two hands on his knees. A bent back straightening. — Three breaths before the answer.
Mujin from the front. The beggar's face is gone — broad and clear, unhurried. No fanfare. — Yi Heon: "My name is Yi Heon. I am the king of this country."
(new) Muyeong outside the door. Hearing it, he bows his head. / Yeonhwa's face. — Outside the door, Muyeong bowed his head. The man I chose was—
(new · hands) Yeonhwa's two hands gripping her skirt. — —the king.
