(new) The yard, wide. Yeonhwa kneeling before the ledger in the dirt; her father at the top of the steps. / (hands) She picks the navy ledger out of the dirt and brushes it off. — The yard. The ledger in the dirt. A book with my mother's handwriting in it. I could not leave it in the dirt.
Kneeling in the yard, Yeonhwa wraps the ledger back into the white bundle. / (new · hands) Hands retying the knot of the bundle. — This is all that is left of my mother's now.
Low angle. From the top of the high stone steps Taesik points a finger at the bundle below. — Taesik: "Hold the wedding first. Then I will give you her things."
Yeonhwa looking up. / Holding the bundle below her waist. She pauses for an instant on "my mother's." — I said I would choose a husband, and my father answered with a bargain. With my mother's keepsakes as the hostage. Yeonhwa: "What is my mother's, I will take."
(new) Taesik looking down from the steps. Eyes that price a thing, not a daughter. / The open gate becomes a frame. Beyond it, under the wall, a man shoved by a Yun servant (seen from behind) shields a child and a bowl of rice with his body. — My father was pricing what his daughter held in her hands. thwack
Mujin lowering himself to the child's eye level. Not a beggar's manner — simply a kind man. / (hands) He tips rice from his own bowl into the child's. — Mujin: "Are you all right? You eat first."
(new) The child eating. Mujin's small smile as he watches. / Yeonhwa's gaze moving from the bundle to the man's face. — A man who shares his food. I grew up seeing only hands that take. That day I saw, for the first time, a hand that gives.
(new · latest script, 13–16s) Taesik from the front. He does not look toward the open gate, only at his daughter. The sneer is only in his voice. / To her father. Composed, but with warmth for the first time — the end of the sentence loosens slightly. — Taesik: "Do you mean to look after that creature too?" Yeonhwa: "At least he does not take from the weak."
Resolve. Still inside the yard, she stands facing her father. One note higher, clear and slow. — Yeonhwa: "I choose that man."
(after the declaration) Holding the bundle, three steps out through the gate. She stops beside Mujin and looks back inside. / (new) Taesik at the top of the steps. His mouth open — no words. — The yard went quiet.
Mujin frozen with the rice bowl in his hands. The surprise is brief. / Chaeryeong follows her out of the gate and snatches once at her sister's sleeve (no shove). Yeonhwa rocks half a step. / Mujin: "…Me?" Chaeryeong: "Is this beggar going to feed you?"
When Yeonhwa finds her balance he lets go of her elbow and steps in front of Chaeryeong. Not a threat — a statement of fact. / Yeonhwa turns toward Mujin. She gives him the choice. — Mujin: "Do not touch her." That one line was not a beggar's voice. Yeonhwa: "I chose. If you do not want this, refuse."
(new · hands) Yeonhwa's arms tighten around the bundle. / (hands) Mujin's hand touching his empty purse. — The choosing was mine. For the first time.
At the same height. Without hesitation, the end of the sentence falling gently. / Doyun crosses the threshold and grabs Yeonhwa's arm. — Mujin: "Then I choose you as well." Doyun: "You really mean to go? With a beggar?"
(hands) Mujin's hand comes in from the bottom of the frame and lifts Doyun's hand off her arm. / Doyun holding his freed wrist. He spits it out, short and low. — Doyun: "This beggar dares."
The two of them walking away down the alley, seen from behind. Doyun, left at the gate, is small. / (new) Doyun and Chaeryeong left at the gate. Chaeryeong takes his sleeve. Doyun is looking down the alley. — My hands were empty. And strangely, for the first time, I was walking on my own feet. The two left at the gate. Chaeryeong held his sleeve, and Doyun was watching the alley.
The yard. Taesik lowering his voice to a servant. No smile — a merchant making a decision. / The gate closing, the bar dropping. — Taesik: "See that no one gives them work. Let them starve and crawl back." clack
(new) Evening. The closed Yun gate seen from outside. — That evening the Yun gate stayed shut.
