(new) An empty thatched house at the end of an alley. The two of them standing at the door. / (hands) The lid comes off the rice jar. It is empty inside. — An empty thatched house at the end of an alley. A house belonging to no one. The rice jar was empty.
A bare room. Yeonhwa before the empty jar; Mujin scratching his head. / Yeonhwa rolling up her sleeves and unfolding her needle case. Composed, with a touch of mischief. — Yeonhwa: "No rice, but we have needles."
(new · hands) The needle case opened — a few needles, thread, a thimble. / The yard. Mujin's axe is buried in the top of a log and will not come out. — What my mother taught me. thwack
(new) Yeonhwa watching from the doorway. A hand over her mouth. / Yeonhwa laughs for the first time — out loud. — I laughed. Even on a day like that, there was something to laugh at.
Mujin, embarrassed. A dry joke delivered with a serious face. / Her face still holding the laugh. — Mujin: "The log won." Yeonhwa: "I haven't even asked your name."
Short and clear. For an instant his eyes waver. / (new) Mujin turning his eyes toward the axe. For just a moment, elsewhere. — Mujin: "They call me Mujin." When he said that name his eyes wavered for an instant. At the time I let it pass. For just a moment, he was looking somewhere else.
The alley. A Yun servant (seen from behind) puts out an arm to block a neighboring merchant who is carrying a bundle of robes. / Yeonhwa watching through the gap of the side door. — Merchant: "It's paid work I'm bringing her. Step aside." My father's order had reached the end of the alley. Cut off her work, starve her, send her home.
Yeonhwa standing before the servant's arm. Low and slow, one word at a time. / The servant's back as he withdraws. The merchant puts the bundle into Yeonhwa's hands. — Yeonhwa: "Has the Yun house bought my needles as well?"
(new) Yeonhwa carrying the bundle of robes back to the thatched house. Her back is straight. / (hands) A needle passing through cloth. — The Yun house could not buy my needles.
(hands) Two coins laid in a palm. / (new) Yeonhwa holding the two coins up to the light. — clink My first wages. Two coins. Two coins. The first money earned by my own hands.
The room in the evening. Yeonhwa divides one bowl of rice exactly in half into two bowls. / Mujin tipping his share back into hers. — Mujin: "You should eat more."
(overhead · reference composition) On the low table, two bowls of rice levelled to the same height. Yeonhwa's hand evens them again with a spoon. — Yeonhwa: "Husband and wife take half each."
Mujin's small smile. / (new) The two of them eating without speaking. One lamp. — They ate without a word.
Night. Mujin lays his bedding by the door of the room. Yeonhwa stiffens, then eases. / Half relief, half a disappointment she cannot name. — Mujin: "Sleep easy tonight. We have not held the wedding yet." Yeonhwa: "…Thank you." I was relieved. And a little, inexplicably, disappointed.
Mujin opening the door and going out. / (new) Yeonhwa left alone. She looks at the closed door. — Mujin: "I will be back shortly." Where does a man go, out that door?
A moonlit alley. A man in black steps out of the dark and drops to one knee. Mujin stands before him, seen from behind. / Muyeong with his head bowed. — That night, in an alley she knew nothing of. Muyeong: "Your Majesty."
Mujin from the front. The face of an entirely different man — the face of a king.
