Ep. 1 · Noise from Upstairs

한국어
Title.
Night. The front door of unit 101.
The studio apartment from above; Mirae lies on the bed with her eyes open.
The ceiling. A chair drags across the floor upstairs.
Mirae closes her eyes and breathes out.
The sound again. Her eyes open.
She sits on the edge of the bed and looks up at the ceiling.
"Tonight I'm going up."
The door upstairs opens and Jun comes out.
Jun rubbing his eyes.
Mirae: "Please stop dragging that chair. Every night at midnight."
Jun: "…We don't have a chair."
Jun's room, with no chair in it.
Mirae goes still.
Jun: "…Text me if you hear it again. I'll listen with you."
Back in bed, the room dark.
A quiet ceiling.
Mirae's eyes follow the sound downward.
Mirae sits up. She is alone in the room.
The phone buzzing on the blanket.
A text — Jun: Is that sound coming from below you right now? I hear it too. From under me.
Mirae's face lit by the screen.
The black gap between the floorboards, and the sound beneath it.
Mirae with her ear against the floor.
Behind Mirae, whose eyes are closed, an ash-grey hand rises from the gap in the boards.
The hand reaching to just short of her hair.
Her eyes open.
There is nothing behind her. The phone buzzes.
A text — Jun: Should I come down?
A whisper: "No. …I'm on the first floor."
A text — Mirae: No.
(blank)
Mirae sitting on the floor with her ears covered; the sound goes on.
"What do you want from me!"
Silence.
Morning. Hands taping a box shut.
Her back as she carries the box out into the corridor.
The closed door of unit 101.
Night. The new tenant's boxes, and one chair.
The gap between the boards beside a chair leg.
An ash-grey hand comes up through the gap and takes hold of the chair leg.
The hand drags the chair.
It keeps dragging.
The end.
