Recap (black band). — Yun Taesik went down the steps in bonds. Doyun, in prison, offered to pay his debt with the money meant for Chaeryeong's wedding.

The garrison receiving room. An open money chest on the low table. Chaeryeong reaches for it; Yeonhwa is opposite; Doyun sits to the side, bound. / Chaeryeong. Shrill — high and fast. — The next morning, the garrison receiving room. Chaeryeong: "Why should my wedding money go to her?"
(hands) Yeonhwa lays a hand on the money chest. She does not take out any paper. Her torn left sleeve. / (memory · new) Ep. 2 — the day Yeonhwa paid Doyun's debt. Silver pushed across a table. — Ep. 2. Yeonhwa paid Doyun's debt for him. That money has never been returned.
Her hand still on the chest, she speaks to her sister. Composed — informal, dry. / Doyun. The jailer loosens the cord on his front hands just enough to write. Pleading — more honorifics, faster. — Yeonhwa: "I paid his debt. That money comes first." Doyun: "I did not know he was the king. And this matter too—" After he learned who the king was, Doyun's speech filled with honorifics.
(hands) Yeonhwa's hand drawing the money chest toward herself. She does not turn her head toward Doyun.
Yeonhwa from the front. Cold anger — low and slow. — Yeonhwa: "Paying a debt and locking me in a room are two different things."
(hands) Sol-i's hands counting the last bundle of coins. No face. / Sol-i's face. Bright and quick — a working woman. She sets the counted bundle on the table. Nothing is spilled. — Sol-i: "The amount is right."
(hands) Yeonhwa closes the lid of the chest while the jailer tightens Doyun's cord again. There is no paper in this episode. / (close-up) The betrothal pin in Chaeryeong's hair — Yeonhwa looks at it. — The money went back where it belonged. Ep. 1. The pin snatched out of my fist and set in her hair.
Composed — two short sentences. / Chaeryeong pulls out the pin and sets it on the table. A sneer — high, singsong. — Yeonhwa: "Give the pin back too. I never gave it to you." Chaeryeong: "You don't want the man, but you begrudge me this?"
Yeonhwa from the front. Cold anger — slow, one word at a time. — Yeonhwa: "Not wanting it does not make it yours."
(hands) Yeonhwa's hand laying the pin on the white cloth in Sol-i's hands. / Chaeryeong's face, one second. No words. — It took twelve episodes for what was taken to come back. What came back was not the pin but the order of things.
Outside the garrison. Chaeryeong catches Min Chi-gyeom, who has come to see his son. / Chaeryeong. Desperate — clinging, high. — Outside the garrison. Min Chi-gyeom, come to see his son. Chaeryeong: "Please see the marriage through. I cannot be dragged down as well."
Min Chi-gyeom from the front. Quiet — gentle, one small closed-mouth smile. The cruellest words are the quietest. — Min Chi-gyeom: "Very well. My house has nothing to do with the Yun house now."
Chaeryeong's face, two seconds — she got what she asked and lost everything. / (new) Min Chi-gyeom walking away, his back to her. Chaeryeong stays where she is. — She got what she asked for. And lost everything. The cruellest words were the quietest.
The same afternoon. The guest annex north of the palace, from outside. / Sol-i closes the door to screen her and brings in new clothes — a pale blue jacket and a grey skirt. — The same afternoon. North of the palace, the protected annex. New clothes arrived.
(hands) Yeonhwa's hands folding the old white jacket. The torn left sleeve comes uppermost. / Yeonhwa in the new clothes. Sol-i puts the torn sleeve into the mending basket. Brightly. — That sleeve had come all the way from Ep. 7. Sol-i: "I'll mend this for you."
Yeonhwa's face in the new clothes. A small closed-mouth smile. / The door opens and the head court lady stands in the doorway — a backlit silhouette, no face. A voice from outside. — I had walked that road torn. It was the first time anyone offered to mend it. "The Queen Dowager summons you." the door sliding
Yeonhwa rising. Sol-i takes her place a step behind. Toward the door. — The Queen Dowager. The king's mother. The road to telling my mother's story passes by her.
