(hands · silent) Taesik's thumb, red with ink, presses onto the bottom of the paper. / (new · hands) The paper into the broker's sleeve, the silver into Taesik's hand. — Thirty nyang. That was how the price of a daughter was set.
(new) Taesik alone. He finishes his drink with the silver in front of him. / Chaeryeong leaning on the door frame, touching the hairpin. As if it were nothing. — Taesik finished his drink. As though that ended the night. Chaeryeong: "Poverty always suited my sister anyway."
(new) The thatched house at dawn in the mist. A cock crowing. / First light. Mujin already up, carrying a water jar. — At the same hour, the thatched house. cock-a-doodle-doo Dawn. Mujin: "I'll fetch water. I'll make breakfast."
Yeonhwa just awake. She genuinely laughs. / (new) Mujin at the back door, scratching his head with a sheepish grin. — Yeonhwa: "You, who can't even split firewood?" I thought that was how our mornings would begin. The man who took a whole day over one log.
After Mujin goes out the back door. Yeonhwa lifts the ledger from beside her feet onto her lap. / (new · hands) Yeonhwa's hands opening the ledger. Her mother's handwriting. — It was the only thing my mother left.
(new) Several shadows on the door lattice. Footsteps. / The front door is flung open. The broker in the doorway. A man behind her blocks the way out. — heavy footsteps bang
The broker's face. Businesslike — someone come to collect goods. / (new · hands) The document the broker holds out — a red thumbprint. — Broker: "Your father sold you." A red mark. It was my father's thumb.
Yeonhwa. Her hands close on the ledger in her lap. The laughter leaving her face. — That morning, I was worth thirty nyang.
